What is an age spot and why is everybody so afraid of it? You may have heard your friends or your mom talk about it, but when you are young, it is quite forgivable to be clueless about this topic. So to satisfy your curiosity, here are some pieces of information that you may want to know about them.
Age spots are known to be dark pigmentations that are primarily caused by overexposure to the sun’s harmful rays. They are commonly found on the face, neck, chest and along the arm area. They are called as such because they often emerge during the second half of one’s life. And being identified as age indicators, anyone and everyone who has age spots are just dying to get rid of them.
So the next question is, how exactly can you remove or erase these spots?
The technology today brings a lot of means. One of the more common means to lighten these pigmentations is the use laser beams. Laser treatments may be costly but it removes the spots effectively and permanently. Depending on the darkness of the spot, a patient may need to have several 20 minute sessions until they have been completely erased.
If laser treatment proves to be way over the budget, you may opt for other methods such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Although the methods of these two treatments are different, the principle used is relatively the same – to remove the old layer of skin and give way to a fresher one. However, it is important to note that, although treatments can effectively erase these dark spots, they always have the tendency to go back if the skin is again exposed to the sun. In short, the statement “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure” also apply in this case. You can keep age spots off your body by avoiding direct exposure to the sun or by applying sunscreen lotion with at least 30 SPF whenever you go out.
